The Everlasting 'Kees,'
the Hammam Glove
Purification rituals have been an intrinsic aspect of human behavior, evolving in diverse forms across cultures and epochs. While some assert the Moroccan Hammam traces its roots to the Roman Thermae of the second century, a more credible lineage can be traced back to the third millennium BCE, during the flourishing period of the Indus Civilization. This ancient Bronze-age culture embraced communal bathing, as evidenced by the discovery of the Great Bath during the 1920 excavation of Mohenjo-Daro, situated within present-day Pakistan. These archaeological finds underscore the enduring presence of bathhouses throughout history, with the possibility of even earlier origins awaiting discovery. Central to these cleansing ceremonies is the “Kees,” a term derived from Arabic, believed to have been innovated by the Moors, who excelled in various technologies including textiles. The “Kees” refers to a sac-like pouch designed to fit snugly in the hand, facilitating the scrubbing of the skin. Remarkably, this distinctive mitt continues to be utilized in contemporary times across North Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe, illustrating its enduring significance across cultures.

Crafted from natural wood pulp, the Kees is intricately woven to delicately exfoliate the skin, offering a gentle yet effective cleansing experience. In contemporary Moroccan culture, it stands as a quintessential tool for both beauty and wellness practices. Employed with a methodical approach, the Kees transcends its physical function of cleansing and stimulating blood flow, extending its influence to the spiritual realm. It is widely believed that the act of scrubbing away physical impurities concurrently dispels negative energies that cling to the spirit, thus harmonizing both body and soul.

About Me
As a Moroccan native, the Hammam practice became essential to my wellness early in life. Even after migrating to the US, where communal baths are rare, using the Kees to exfoliate my skin remained a core part of my cleansing ritual. People often complimented the softness of my skin, and my youthful appearance frequently surprised those who learned my true age. My secret was the Kees.
When the market became flooded with inferior imitations, tarnishing the reputation of this magical tool, I felt as though my heritage was under attack. This drove me to start my own company, dedicated to crafting the finest exfoliating gloves in the world. Each Melliza Kees is meticulously handmade to ensure maximum effectiveness and durability, surpassing all other authentic mitts on the market.
I am here to represent my culture and share one of its most cherished traditions with you. I hope you enjoy my product.
With love,
Sarra
